Joseph G. Masters papers, 1900-1939.

Collection includes correspondence, clippings, excerpts from printed material, research material on Western U.S. history, particularly sites and events along the Oregon Trail. Photographs in the collection were acquired or taken by Masters on hikes and trips along the Oregon Trail, the Santa Fe Trail and throughout the Western U.S. (ca. 1929-1939): ca. 1600 photographs, ca. 1350 negatives and ca. 100 postcards of the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail ; images include related grave sites, forts, historical markers, canyons, passes, rivers and streams, battlefields, etc. in the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon for the Oregon Trail; Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico for the Santa Fe Trail. Includes views of battlefields: Little Big Horn, Montana; Wagon Box Fight, Wyoming; Adobe Walls, Texas; Battle of the Washita, Oklahoma; Wounded Knee, South Dakota; and the Battle of Blue Creek, Nebraska. Views of forts: Bent's Fort, Colorado; Fort Dodge, Kansas; Fort Robinson, Nebraska; Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Fort Zarah, Kansas; Fort Vancouver, Washington; Fort Union, New Mexico; Fort Supply, Oklahoma; Fort Larned, Kansas; Camp Nichols, Oklahoma, Fort Phil Kearney, Wyoming, and Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Photographs and postcards of Native Americans, some identified, archaeological sites, and New Mexico pueblos. Images of California and some family vacation snapshots. Includes enlarged, captioned photographs of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails and negatives for the majority of the photographic prints.

Joseph Gallio Masters was born on on a homestead near Newton, Kan. on February 20, 1873. He worked in Neb. as a teacher, principal, superintendent of schools, and WPA Supervisor of Education for Omaha (1940-1942). Masters was also a member of the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Oregon Trail Memorial Association. He died on May 19, 1954 in Smethport, Pa. From the description of Joseph G.
